Greenock’s 2024 cricket season ended on Saturday when their final league fixture was called off after the ground failed to survive the almost constant rain which had fallen during the week.
With both teams present at the ground, and warm sunshine beating down on one of the best days of the summer months, the league umpire who had been assigned to the match declared the match off after a pitch inspection.
Despite having had the covers on the pitch, rainwater had nevertheless managed to get under the covers and it had not dried out sufficiently to make play possible.
It was a disappointing end to a season of mixed performances which left Greenock in fourth top position of the Western Premiership Two league table just 0.51 per cent behind Saturday’s opponents, Renfrew, who finished in third top spot.
Greenock’s 2nd XI's game in Glasgow against Milngavie's 2nd XI did go ahead, but the team did not do themselves justice and fell to a 109 run defeat, which meant that they finished the season in sixth place in the Western Championship Three league.
Shujaat Hussain bowled well to take five for 37, but Milngavie compiled an imposing 196 in their innings.
In reply, Muhammad Zeeshan made 32 and Maroof Kochai 18, but the rest of the batting line-up failed to contribute and the side was bowled out for just 87.
