TOWERING Morton defender Morgan Boyes hopes that his side's win against Cowdenbeath can be the slice of fortune that gets them up and running in the William Hill Championship at the fifth time of asking.

Ton are yet to win in the league after opening with three consecutive draws before blowing a two-goal lead against Falkirk at Cappielow 10 days ago.

But the Welshman played his part as Ton defeated Cowdenbeath 1-0 at Central Park on Saturday to progress to the last 16 of the SPFL Trust Trophy.

And even if it wasn't pretty at times, with keeper Ryan Mullen having to save an Olly Whyte penalty to keep Ton's noses in front, Boyes says that getting that winning feeling back could be what gets his side off the mark this weekend when they travel to Lesser Hampden to face Queen's Park.

A win on Saturday would see Ton leapfrog Callum Davidson's men into at least sixth position.

The Spiders haven't beaten Morton since they were promoted to the second tier, and Boyes hopes they can continue to do the business against the Spiders.

He told the Tele: "We're really happy to have gotten the win. Without being disrespectful to Cowdenbeath, it was just about going there, doing the job, and getting out as quickly as possible.

"We'll now take the positives from that game, and the clean sheet, and hopefully take it into the Queen's Park game this weekend.

"The main thing for me, as a defender, is about getting clean sheets. It starts with the back four, and then the responsibility is shared across the whole team.

"It was a team effort, though, because we could've easily fallen foul like we did at East Fife at the beginning of the season.

"Credit where credit's due, Ryan Mullen has pulled off an excellent save from the penalty and managed to keep that clean sheet for us."
