Greenock Wanderers were brushed aside and blown away in Forfar on Saturday as Strathmore ran in seven tries before half-time in a wholly traumatic afternoon.
In fairness, Wanderers travelled to Angus with an under-strength side consisting of a couple of players who only took the game up last year and a very late call off from a key player which required a major change in the backs.
The home side, by contrast, had a devastating mix of energy, ambition and elan, and savaged the visitors with a merciless performance.
The hosts scored seven tries in the first half, gaining the try bonus point through a combination of some poor kicking and the speed with which the home side moved the ball about through their pacy backs.
Strathmore were utterly dominant, with their big ball-carriers taking the match to Wanderers with a ferocity the visitors could not live with.
Wanderers had rare forays into the home half but they were easily dealt with by the home side.
The second half brought no joy to the visitors as Strathmore piled on the grief by scoring a further three tries in the first 12 minutes after the restart.
In the final quarter Wanderers had their best passages of play, and Robb was denied a consolation try for the visitors when he was brought up inches from the try line.
Wanderers, who now lie eighth in National 4 following Saturday’s game, will have to regroup and prepare for their next match, when they play host to a Moray side who are above them in the table, a game targeted for a home win.
The men's second XV lost 52-22 to their Cartha Queens Park counterparts on Saturday.
Elsewhere at the weekend, the U16 boys lost 36-17 to Strathmore and the boys’ under-14s won 26-5 away to Biggar.
The club’s brand new girls’ under-10s squad took part in their first tournament at Marr on Sunday, with 18 players making up two teams.
There was a fantastic atmosphere with the girls all loving their first game day experience.
A spokesperson for the ladies and girls’ section said: “A big special thank you to our coaches Pamela, Lauren and Claire who have taken the team from their very first training session to now.
“The transformation is completely overwhelming thanks to them.”
Wanderers’ club sponsors are MMSEARCH, while the ladies and girls are sponsored by Straps of Gourock and Brow House Cosmetics.
