Morton: Austin Samuels on emotional moment that ended exile

Samuels ended a year spell without stepping on the pitch, in what was a horribly frustrating spell in his final season at former club, Inverness where he featured for little over five minutes in a whole year, when he came on as a second half sub against Accies just hours after penning a short term contract until the end of January.

Samuels is looking to kickstart his career at Cappielow (Image: paul paterson) And he says that it was a watershed moment for him as he looks to get his career back on track, but in an incredibly open and candid chat he revealed that the most emotional moment throughout a summer of looking for a club was receiving a call from Ton gaffer Dougie Imrie to give him the chance to get back to doing what he loves.

"It was an emotional moment getting back out on the pitch," he told the Tele. "But actually getting the call from the gaffer was probably an even bigger moment for me.

"Actually getting that call that meant I was going to be back in a club was really big for me. When I get out on the pitch I can put all those things aside and get back to doing what I love and focus on the job at hand.

​"I've had to be patient. For me, I've got a lot of trust and faith in God, so I put all of my trust in God. I knew I had to keep patient and pray every day in the hope that something comes up.

"It looks like something's come up so my faith is justified. It keeps me grounded and it keeps me calm.

"I didn't let myself get too down or too depressed throughout the summer when I was seeing boys sign elsewhere. It actually takes a lot of weight off of my shoulders. That's why I put my trust in him and I'm glad it paid off.

"I was delighted that I was able to help contribute to getting the club through to the next round as well.

"I'm just delighted to be back in the game because it has been a very long summer being without a club.

"I'm delighted to be in training with a group again because it means I can get not only my fitness, but my sharpness back up as well."

The former Wolves kid wants to make the most of his chance (Image: paul paterson) Samuels, who penned a short term contract on Friday, had been training with his new club off the back of Jay Emmanuel-Thomas' departure from the club, but when interest rekindled late last week he jumped at the chance to get back in the game.

And he's determined to make the most of his opportunity as he looks to rekindle that magic touch that comes with more game time in the coming weeks.

"Hopefully with the more games I get then I can progress more and hopefully show everyone just what I can do," he added.

"The more games I play, the more confidence I'll get and the sharper I'll get. As long as I'm getting out on the pitch and I'm getting into the right areas and touches on the ball, I'll only get better.

"I know I should've scored but I just know within myself that after a year of no professional football there's bound to be some cobwebs there, with a few more still to be blown off so that's what my aim for the next few weeks is, is to get back to my best."
