MORTON have paid tribute following the death of former manager Benny Rooney.
Benny passed away over the weekend, at the age of 80.
His death comes just a couple of months after he was inducted into the club's hall of fame.
Benny was in charge during a hugely successful spell at Cappielow in the late 1970s and early 80s, leading Ton to the top flight and keeping them there for five years.
During this spell they famously topped the 10-team Premier Division in December 1979, deep into the season, before eventually finishing sixth.
Rooney also led his side to two semi-final appearances in national cup competitions and is fondly remembered and revered by supporters.
A club statement said: "Greenock Morton are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Benny Rooney, a true Morton great.
"Earlier this year, Benny was inducted into the Greenock Morton Hall of Fame, an accolade he more than deserved for his contribution to the club.
"Everyone at the club would like to send their deepest condolences to Benny’s family at this sad time."
