MORTON goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald made two top early saves to help his new club off to a winning start on Saturday - and now wants to follow it up against old side Raith Rovers.

The veteran goalie had months without competitive football over the summer.

While he spent time training with Livingston and Edinburgh City to keep himself ticking over, he admits there is no substitute for the cut and thrust of league action.

He told the Tele: “It always settles you down quite quickly when you can pull off a couple of saves.

"It gives you a bit of confidence too, although by the end of the first half my body was screaming at me it's safe to say.

“That was my first game in over three months.

"I’ve been fortunate enough that Livingston gave me training facilities over the last few weeks.

“I was coaching with Edinburgh too, which was great, but it’s not the same as being in amongst it on a day-to-day basis.”

The 37-year-old is keen to kick on from the weekend win against Ayr.

In the way this weekend are his former employers Raith Rovers and he’s fully aware of the task that lies ahead.

The Stark’s Park side have undergone big changes over the summer, with new owners and fresh faces in the dressing room.

MacDonald said: “I’m really hoping that we can build on our positive start and follow it up with another good result this weekend.

“It was a great start for us, now we need to build on it.

“But we know how difficult this league is, everyone can beat everyone.

“There’s no standouts because it’s all difficult games from start to finish.

"I suppose that that’s the most attractive part of the league.

“It’s all equal teams and it doesn’t matter who you’re up against, it’s really about who shows up best on the day.

“You just need to look at last season, we got down to the last day and nine of the 10 teams had something to play for, which is crazy to think about.

“That shows how tough it is to play in the Championship.

"But we have made a great start and hopefully we can capitalise on it this weekend."
