MODEST Morton manager Dougie Imrie says he's honoured to be even mentioned in the same sentence as legendary Cappielow boss Benny Rooney.

A draw against Queen's Park last week meant that Imrie matched a famous 14-match unbeaten run overseen by Rooney with his iconic late seventies/early eighties Ton team.

But he insists he has a long way to go before being spoken about in such illustrious company as the club Hall of Fame man, who passed away last year.

Imrie said: "To be matching the run of someone as highly thought of as Benny Rooney, or even beating that if we don't get defeated today, would be something that stays with me for a long, long time.

"I'm certainly proud of that. I enjoy what I do and I love my job. I've got aspirations to go to the very top and I'm very privileged and thankful to Morton to be in the position that I'm in.

"It's always good to have accolades and records, but at the end of the day my job is to win games of football, that's what I'm here to do.

"At times you don't really look into that too much, because I think that's something I'll look back on in years to come but in the moment you just want to win as many games and to be as successful as you can."

Imrie admits that he is savouring proving people wrong after he and his side were questioned when they fell to the bottom of the league this season amid a horrendous run of injuries.

He said: "I've always stuck by my opinions, especially when we were getting struck down with all the injuries.

"I probably sounded like a broken record, but I think we're now proving that with a full quota we're a match for anyone."

Ahead of today's Cappielow clash against Airdrie, the manager is now looking ahead to an potentially exciting end to the season with his men in the hunt for a promotion play-off place and in the last eight of the Scottish Cup.

He said: "We've got a lot to go and play for. We're still in the cup and have got the prospect of a great quarter final against Hearts to look forward to.

"We're also currently embroiled in that battle for the play-offs but we'll not get carried away because we're aware of the difficulties that we had only two or three months ago.

"We're aware how quickly football can change, so we won't allow ourselves to get complacent.

"This weekend we've got a good opportunity to keep on building that gap between ourselves and Airdrie, albeit they have a game in hand. But we've also got a chance to chase down Partick as well, which is our aim as well now."
