MORTON will hope to end a 43-year wait for a Scottish Cup semi-final spot tonight against Hearts at Cappielow.
In their last quarter final it wasn’t to be for Jim Duffy's squad when they travelled to Celtic Park in March 2018 and fell to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Brendan Rodgers’ men after a less-than-ideal week of preparations.
Players and coaching staff had been snowed in during a period of sub-zero temperatures caused by the 'Beast from the East' storms and traffic restrictions.
The Tele’s match report read: “Ton did find a small patch at Battery Park on the Friday to get some work done, so it was a case of suck it and see for the visitors going into the game.
“For the 1,400 or so Morton fans, tucked away in the Lisbon Lions Stand, they played their part with plenty of vocal backing as the Ton sought to cause a major upset.”
Moussa Dembele’s second half double and a 90th minute effort from Odsonne Edouard put an end to Morton’s cup hopes for the season.
Despite reaching the last eight on nine occasions since 1980, Morton’s most recent quarter-final win came against Clydebank in the 1980/81 season.
The match went to a replay following a goalless draw at Cappielow, with Benny Rooney’s side securing a spot in the final four in an impressive 0-6 win at New Kilbowie Park.
Morton’s hunt for cup glory later ended in a 2-1 defeat to Rangers at Celtic Park in the semi-finals.
Dougie Imrie’s men will hope to end the long wait for a trip to Hampden against Hearts tonight. Follow all the action on the Tele’s live blog from 4pm.
