AN INVERCLYDE football club has announced its intention to fold after spending almost five decades in Scotland’s amateur leagues.

Inverclyde AFC shared a statement online, noting that the decision was made after ‘much debate and consideration’.

The club said: “Having been part of the amateur ranks for 49 years, this was not a decision that was taken lightly.

“However, it had become increasingly apparent in recent months that a combination of work, family and other commitments for players and coaching staff alike were making it extremely challenging to continue to remain competitive.

“We would like to take the opportunity to thank all the players and coaches, both past and present, who represented the club over the years.

“Thank you also to our many sponsors, without whom we simply could have survived, let alone flourished.

“Also to the supporters who turned up in all weathers to back the team and, of course, the opposition sides we played against over the years.

“It’s a sad day and of course we are all disappointed, but ultimately we felt this was the right decision for everyone at this time.

“Perhaps the future will see the club return, but for now at least, it’s time to call it quits.”

The side won the Scottish AFL Premier League title in 2021/22.
