MORTON boss Dougie Imrie is thinking of plotting an ambitious move to reunite with former Cappielow Player of the Year Liam Grimshaw, the Tele can reveal.

Reports yesterday suggested that Grimshaw was free to leave Tannadice, only months after helping Jim Goodwin’s side get back to the Premiership at the first time of asking last season, should The Terrors boss secure adequate midfield cover.

And it is understood that Ton gaffer Imrie has been monitoring the Cappielow hero’s situation for a number of weeks as he goes about putting the finishing touches on a new look squad ahead of the new campaign.

Grimshaw, who featured at both right back and in midfield for both Ton and last year’s Championship winners United, hasn’t started either of the Terrors’ Premier Sports Cup group matches thus far.

A culmination of factors have seen Grimshaw fall out of favour at Tannadice, including a change of system he arrivals of Ryan Strain on the right side of defence and David Babunski in midfield, coupled with the emergence of Miller Thomson last season.

He came off the bench to replace Thomson in United’s league cup defeat to Falkirk at the weekend before being an unused sub against Stenhousemuir on Tuesday night.

It is thought that the Ton chief is exploring the option to bring the former Motherwell and Preston man back to Inverclyde, although it is understood that a Cappielow reunion is one of ‘several options’ that Grimshaw has on the table after being found down the pecking order.

It is understood that a move, either in the form of a loan or a permanent switch could be seen as difficult to pull off, given the wage that Grimshaw currently sits on at Tannadice after securing a return to the Scottish top flight.

Although there is the hope that the emotional attachment that comes with his standing affiliation, that's seen several nods of the cap given in excerpts with publications such as Nutmeg magazine towards the club, could sway in Imrie's favour.

Imrie is thought to be in the market for a no.9 ahead of the beginning of the new season, as Ton head to Firhill to take on Partick on August 3.
