MORTON captain Grant Gillespie says he's loving getting to grips with the new style of play that's being implemented by Ton chief Dougie Imrie - insisting he has no reason to believe that it won't come to fruition.

Ton's League Cup campaign has rather disappointingly failed to get off the ground, registering only one win and scoring one goal in three games thus far.

But Gillespie says the onus is on him and his teammates to learn when the time is right to implement the new possession-based style. However, he believes that will come in time as the new look squad assembled continues to gel and develop.

And whilst Gillespie sympathises with fans' early frustrations, he hopes that the squad are given time to show what they can do as he believes that performances aren't too far away.

He told the Tele: "As a midfielder I'm really enjoying the way that the gaffer wants us to try and play, it means in my position at least you're getting more touches on the ball and things like that.

"Obviously it's then down to us to realise when it's on to play and when it's not. That'll come with games though.

"The League Cup campaign has been disappointing, but I don't think the performances have been too bad. Even in the East Fife game, there was nothing in it, but it was a case of them taking their chances when they came.

"The scoreline probably made the performance look worse than it actually was, but overall the performances have been alright, especially the one against St Johnstone.

"It wasn't bad at all, the only difference was a slight difference in quality in the final third. But the way we're playing is enjoyable and it's encouraging that the gaffer's on the side and wanting us to play.

"We just need to keep working away on the training pitch and keep on implementing that style he wants. I've got no reason to believe that it won't work.

"We've only been back for a month and a bit, these things take time. We're still all getting to know each other. It's a transition off the park as much as it is on it.

"We'll get to know each other better and we'll get better as time goes on. It'll proabably be another month, month-and-a-half for us to fully understand one another's games.

"If we can have a bit of patience, we understand that the fans want us to win every week and we'd love to do that too, but it does take time.

"The gaffer's added some real quality to the group both on and off the pitch and he's looking to add one or two more. That'll mean more new players adjusting to the squad, and it might take us a wee bit of time but we're getting there."

Gillespie looked ahead to this weekend's clash against Alloa as they look to round off the Premier Sports Cup group stage with a win.

And he says the pressure remains the same, even if his side are already out of the competition whilst Alloa could top the group with a victory at Cappielow.

Gillespie added: "There's always pressure when you play for a club like Morton and that's the pressure we've put on ourselves to go out and produce the quality that the fans want to see, so going into Saturday it'll be no different.

"It's not going to be a walkover, it's by no means a meaningless game going by the results on Tuesday night.

"At the end of the day there's always pride at stake and we want to finish the group stages off as positively as possible."
