MORTON skipper Grant Gillespie says that the goals will come as he was quick to reel off the positives when asked to provide his assessment on the opening weeks of the season.

Ton find themselves in the position of having a free weekend after failing to qualify for the Premier Sports Cup knockout stages but such an enforced break has given the playmaker ample opportunity to look back on what has been a hectic few weeks.

He wasn’t shy in listing off the positives as he and his teammates look to quickly gel together in this new-look side that Cappielow boss Dougie Imrie wants to take in another direction as he reiterated his belief that the goals will come after picking up two points from their opening two games.

He told the Tele: “The first part of the season has been good. We were naturally disappointed not to qualify from the league cup group, but I think if you take out the East Fife game then the performances have been decent.

“I think we’ve been getting better every week and then in the first two league games we’ve played really well.

“It’s a tough start, going away to Partick but I think the boys performed brilliantly.

“I think we’re slightly disappointed not to have got more points on the board in the first two games which I think is the only frustrating part from the league fixtures anyway.

“We’re frustrated that we’ve not got more points than we’ve accumulated but I don’t think that anyone can say that we’ve not had a good start – but that’s all it is.

“It’s important that we keep on working on the training field, hammering it in how we want to play and just remain positive.

“We’ve got the break now, which gives boys a few days off to rest and recover before gearing up for the Livingston game next week.

“That’ll be a massive game. So, if we can replicate our performances of the last two games and just start finding the back of the net then I think we’ll be alright.”

Gillespie has taken great pride in his side’s first two run outs of the season, despite seeing his side fail to hit the back of the net.

They have though, kept two clean sheets and sit two points off the top four after draws against Partick and Hamilton and Gillespie says that Ton need to stick to their newfound principles as they look to get their first win of the season in West Lothain in eight days time.

He added: “I think that anyone who’s come to watch the two games will have left, especially last Saturday, wondering how we’ve not won.

“I thought we played exceptionally at times and the only thing that was missing was the goal.

“But they’ll come. It’s still relatively early in the season so if we keep doing the things that we have been then they will.

“We’re still learning about each other, we’re a new team so it’s important that we stick to our principles and remain positive because when the chances do come we'll be ready to take them."
