MORTON defender Jack Baird insists that it’s pleasing to see a new-look Cappielow side making the necessary small gains in the early part of the season ahead of this weekend's trip to Livingston.

The towering stopper was pleased to help his side pick up a second clean sheet in two games after returning from a near month-long injury lay off after injuring his shoulder against Brechin City as their unbeaten start to the league continued.

And he says that’s gone a long way in blanking out the disappointment of his side’s league cup campaign where Ton failed to make it out of the group stage as he talked up the importance of building momentum early on in the season, just like his side are trying to do.

He told the Tele: “We’re trying to make small gains as every game passes us by. That clean sheet on Saturday was another one.

“Two clean sheets in a row is always pleasing but to do it with a changing defence and a new look side is that bit more satisfying.

“I think it was one poor result that had killed us in the group stages in fairness, but it is what it is at that time of the season there are lots of shocks and it’s hard to get out of the groups now.

“You just need to keep plodding along and do what you can, but I think we’ve managed to do that and build a bit of momentum in the early part of the season.”
