GREENOCK Juniors’ development team are looking to build on a fine victory on the road when they open their West of Scotland Development League campaign tonight.
The team topped their section in the WOSFL Development League Cup with a hard-fought win away to Kilwinning Rangers last week, with Craig Darroch scoring the only goal and captain Chris Lepick taking the man of the match award.
This Friday sees the Greenock team play host to Thorn Athletic in their opening match in Conference D, looking to build on their sixth-placed finish in Conference C in 2023-24.
Over the last year or so matches between these two have produced some very high quality football, so Friday night’s game is definitely one to look forward to. Kick-off at Battery Park is at 8pm.
Meanwhile, the club’s 2007s produced a great performance to win 5-3 at home to St Peter’s on Saturday.
Scorers were Scobie, Scott, McColgan, McKenzie and Connelly and the man of the match was Aiden Blair.
The result means the team are a healthy three wins from four at this early stage of the season; next up is a challenging away match to Harmony Row.
Without a game the previous week, the 2008s produced a classy performance to defeat Dumbarton 5-4 – though the scoreline does not reflect the dominance the team showed in a crowd-pleasing display of technical football.
More of the same would be very welcome in the coming weeks. The Greenock scorers were Dhother (2), Keyes (2) and Miller, while Liam Kane took the man of the match honours.
The 2009’s, after starting the season in fine form, came back down to earth with a bump, going down 7-0 away to a traditionally strong Barrhead Gunners team on Friday night.
It is all part of the learning curve for a new team packed with quality players and they will quickly bounce back. Lewis Owens was the man of the match.
