MORTON WFC boss Gary Forbes insists progress has been made as he assesses his side's opening few weeks of the season and he believes that Ton's free weekend has come at a good time.

The Parklea side have no fixture this weekend after being knocked out of the League Cup by Glasgow Women at the start of the month.

And Forbes, who returned to the club in July, is hoping that he can use the free week to make the most of some extra time on the training field.

But after a slow burner of a start to the season, Forbes insists that you can see the steps forward that his side are taking.

"The free weekend comes at a good time for us," he told the Tele.

"I think it's nice for us to get an extra few sessions in before we face Stirling University.

"We're aware of just how hectic the first three months have been for the club, and the players, to put us in the position that we're in now.

"It's nice to have that gap there, because it gives us a chance to look back and assess, but it gives us a chance to progress as well.

"To look at the league fixtures that we've had, it's not been a bad return at all.

"The positive that we're looking at is that we've gained points in half of those games, and two of those have been away from home.

"I think that's quite important because we've only had two league games at home out of six. I think that's showing that we're capable of getting results that we might not have got last season.

"It's pleasing. But we're under no illusions that there's still plenty of work to be done. We want to start turning these draws into wins, like I've said before, and we want to keep in touch with the teams above us.

"We're probably, where we want to be, we're not a million miles away and we're where we wanted to be at in terms of player development too."
