WINGER Owen Moffat has insisted Morton possess all the hallmarks of being a good team and says the feeling of dejection in the Ton dressing room after Saturday’s controversial defeat to Ayr proves it.

The ex-Celtic kid admitted the Ton weren’t at their best against the Honest Men but was adamant they didn’t deserve to lose the tie in an evenly fought contest at Somerset Park.

His main bone of contention was unsurprisingly the way in which the Ton fell behind thanks to Jay Henderson’s second half penalty.

Moffat and his Ton teammates were left enraged after referee Colin Steven appeared to miss a clear double touch when the spot kick was being taken, with the winger still insistent that his side should’ve been awarded an indirect free kick as a result.

He told the Tele: “We weren’t at our best and we probably should have taken our chances in the first half.

“For the performance we put in, which weren't to our standard, to still come away knowing we shouldn’t have lost is frustrating.

“It’s gutting to lose that in the way we did.

"In my opinion there was nothing to split the two sides. But feeling like that shows we can be a good team.

“They get a penalty, which probably is a penalty, but I don’t know what everyone else thinks about what happened next.

“He’s clearly hit it with his right onto his left and it’s got top spin on the ball going into the net. That only happens with two touches.

“It’s so blatant to us but the ref has made his decision.

“I thought in the first half, defensively we were very good. Everyone knew their roles and we limited them to very little.

"There weren't any clear cut chances and then in the second half they get a penalty that decides the game, it’s sickening.

“But not being at our best and there still being nothing between the sides shows just how good we can be.”

Moffat says his side were looking to push on from a convincing win over Airdrieonians last time out - especially after such a good performance.

He's convinced Morton didn’t deserve to lose the game and is looking to use his frustrations from Somerset Park positively against Raith this weekend.

He added: “We wanted to kick on from last week against Airdrie.

“We played really well and we wanted to be able to say we’d followed it up with a win.

“We had a couple of good openings in the first half through Lamar who had one blocked from a few yards out and that was probably one of the clearer chances in the whole game.

“We wanted to keep it going and build on that.

"Yeah, we didn’t play at our best but we definitely didn’t deserve to lose so we just want to get back out there and avenge that."
