EXPERIENCED Morton winger Niall McGinn says that a good run in the SPFL Trust Trophy could be the secret ingredient that the Cappielow side use to spur on a successful league campaign.
Ton head to Lanarkshire tomorrow night, where they'll go into battle against Hamilton Accies looking for a place in the quarter finals of the competition for the fourth season in a row.
And McGinn wants to see the Cappielow men start to pick up more results on the road after earning back-to-back home league wins in recent weeks.
The former Aberdeen man is eyeing up a place in the last eight as he looks to build on recent home successes.
"We want to begin to take that next step as a group and begin to build on hour home performances," he told the Tele.
"Hamilton away on Friday gives us the chance to go and do that.
"Even when we travelled to Ayr after beating Airdrie, we went to Ayr with the same intentions.
"We had spells in the game where we were well in the game and were even on top. The only difference on the day was that penalty situation.
"We bounced back from that by putting in a very good performance [against Raith] where we scored two goals and kept a clean sheet. There were a lot of positives for us."
Ton secured their place in the last 16 with a narrow win away to Cowdenbeath, though it's a trophy, in its various guises, that they've never won, with defeat in the 1992-93 final against tomorrow night's opponents the closest they've come in the tournament's 34-year history.
"In any cup competition, you want to go, be competitive and do well," McGinn continued. It also gives you a chance to set your stall out and sometimes a run deep into the competition can give you a platform to go on and have a good league campaign as well.
"Your main focus, obviously, is your league games. But the game tomorrow against Hamilton is one we're really looking forward to."
McGinn says he's loving life after coming back to Scotland for a third time, following his deadline day arrival on loan from Belfast's Glentoran FC.
He says the move to Inverclyde has seen him hit some big milestones after completing back-to-back 90 minute appearances at the age of 37.
"It's been good to be back in Scotland," he added.
"I know what it's all about, so I feel like i've settled in quite quickly.
"Morton is a good club with good people around it. I'm really enjoying being here.
"Training's been really good and I've really enjoyed playing as well. It's probably my first consecutive 90 minutes that I've had in a very long time, which is really pleasing.
"It's nice to feel a part of a good squad. I just want to stay injury free and keep on working hard now and hopefully I can keep on contributing to the squad.
"In general, I'm loving being back. I know how passionate the fans are about the game and about their club.
"It's good to be back in amongst that again and I'm really looking forward to seeing what the rest of the season holds."
